Volkswagen ID.7 — The Electric Passat Successor

Volkswagen ID.7 — The Electric Passat Successor

22 April 2026

The Volkswagen ID.7 marks VW's most convincing electric car yet. Where earlier ID models felt like experiments, the ID.7 feels like a fully resolved product — a genuine successor to the beloved Passat for the electric age.

Design & Interior

The ID.7 is a handsome, understated saloon that doesn't shout about being electric. At 4,961mm long, it's a big car — longer than a BMW 5 Series — but clean lines and a low roofline keep it from looking ungainly.

Inside, VW has learned from criticisms of earlier ID models. The infotainment system is significantly improved, with a responsive 15-inch touchscreen and — crucially — physical buttons for climate control. The materials are premium, the seats are excellent, and the rear legroom is limousine-like thanks to the flat EV floor.

The boot is a massive 532 litres, expanding to 1,586 litres with the rear seats folded. This is a genuine family car.

Range & Charging

The 77 kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of up to 621 km — among the best in the class. Real-world Irish range sits around 480-530 km depending on conditions, which makes range anxiety a non-issue for virtually any journey in Ireland.

The 200 kW maximum DC charging speed means 10-80% in around 25 minutes. It's not quite as fast as the Hyundai/Kia 800V cars, but it's more than adequate.

Driving Experience

The ID.7 is remarkably refined. Road noise is well-suppressed, the ride is supple over Irish road surfaces, and the cabin remains serene at motorway speeds. The standard progressive steering is accurate and well-weighted.

With 286 PS from the rear-mounted motor, performance is brisk — 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. It doesn't feel sporty in the way a BMW might, but it's more than quick enough for overtaking on Irish national roads.

The optional DCC adaptive dampers are worth specifying. They transform the ride quality, allowing you to dial between comfort for potholed rural roads and sport for more engaging driving.

Verdict

The ID.7 is the electric car that will convince mainstream buyers to make the switch. It's spacious, refined, has excellent range, and feels like a properly premium product. For Irish families who've traditionally bought Passats or Skoda Superbs, this is the natural next step.
