Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid — Ireland's Favourite Small SUV
22 April 2026
The Toyota Yaris Cross has been a runaway success in Ireland, consistently ranking among the top-selling cars in the country. It's easy to see why — it delivers the raised driving position and rugged looks buyers want, wrapped in a package that's easy to park, cheap to run, and built with Toyota's legendary reliability.
Design & Practicality
The Yaris Cross takes the compact Yaris hatchback and adds 90mm of extra ground clearance, roof rails, and SUV-inspired body cladding. It looks considerably more substantial than the regular Yaris, with a wide stance and bold front grille that give it genuine road presence.
At 4,180mm long, it's compact enough for Dublin city streets and supermarket car parks, yet the 397-litre boot is genuinely useful — bigger than many cars in the class above. The rear seats offer decent legroom for adults, though three across the back would be a squeeze.
The interior is well-built if not quite premium. The 9-inch touchscreen runs Toyota's latest multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The materials are durable rather than luxurious, but everything feels like it'll last.
The Hybrid System
Toyota's self-charging hybrid system is the star here. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine pairs with an electric motor to deliver 116 PS through a CVT transmission. There's no plug to worry about — the battery charges itself through regenerative braking and the engine.
In urban driving, the system is brilliant. The car glides along on electric power at low speeds, switching seamlessly to petrol when you need more performance. Toyota claims 4.4 L/100km combined, and in real-world Irish driving, 4.5-5.0 L/100km is entirely achievable. For a car this size, that's outstanding.
Driving Experience
The Yaris Cross won't set your pulse racing, but that's not the point. It's comfortable, quiet at town speeds, and easy to drive. The CVT transmission can drone under hard acceleration, but driven normally, it's unobtrusive.
The raised seating position gives excellent visibility — a real confidence boost on Ireland's narrow rural roads. The steering is light and precise, and the turning circle is tight enough to make U-turns on country roads stress-free.
An AWD version is available with an additional rear electric motor. It's not a serious off-roader, but it provides useful extra traction on wet or muddy Irish roads — worth considering if you live rurally.
Running Costs
This is where the Yaris Cross excels. Road tax is €170 per year. Insurance is reasonable thanks to Toyota's safety reputation. Servicing costs are among the lowest in the segment. And that fuel economy means a full tank of petrol will last well over 800 km.
Resale values are exceptional — Toyota hybrids hold their value better than almost anything else in Ireland.
Verdict
The Toyota Yaris Cross doesn't do anything dramatically, but it does everything well. It's the sensible choice that you'll never regret — reliable, efficient, practical, and backed by Toyota's dealer network across Ireland. If you want a small SUV that just works, this is it.
