Distinction from Skyactiv-D

The non-Skyactiv 2.2L should not be confused with the 2.2L Skyactiv-D (introduced around 2012), which features a much lower compression ratio of 14.01, twin-turbochargers, and is known for different issues, such as oil dilution and carbon build-up. The older MZR-CD 2.2L is generally considered a more traditional diesel engine design from that era.

The Mazda 2.2L non-Skyactiv diesel engine (often designated as the MZR-CD or RF 2005) was produced between 2005 and roughly 2012, commonly found in the 1st generation Mazda6 and Mazda5. It produced 121143 PS (119141 hp) and used a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and common rail injection to meet Euro Stage IV standards.
