The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is special because it isn’t simply a Mustang GT with a body kit. It was effectively the last, highly developed performance version of the S550 Mustang before the new generation car arrived.

It borrows heavily from the Shelby GT350 and GT500

Ford used Ford Performance hardware from the Shelby GT350 and GT500, including cooling, suspension and chassis components. The engine also gets GT350 derived intake and oilcooling technology.

The Mach 1 has the retro Mach 1 identity — the grille treatment, bonnet stripes, side stripes, Mach 1 graphics and unique wheels.

The name goes back to the original 1969 Mustang Mach 1, so it’s a proper piece of Mustang history rather than just another trim level.
